Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in the United States. It causes persistent, invasive, and often irrational fears and worries that interfere with your day-to-day activities and quality of life.

Anxiety causes a variety of mental and physical symptoms that range in severity. For example, you may experience:

  • Feeling nervous or on-edge
  • Having a sense of impending danger or doom
  • Feeling like your mind is racing
  • Reduced concentration
  • Insomnia
  • Increased heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sweating and trembling
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms

Your fears and worries may also lead to behaviors and avoidance that interferes with your ability to perform at work or school. Your anxiety could also interfere with your relationships with friends, family, and loved ones.

What causes anxiety?

Despite its prevalence, the causes of anxiety aren’t fully understood. However, medical researchers know that several factors can contribute to anxiety. For example, your genetics and brain chemistry can contribute to anxiety.

Additionally, if you have a family member with anxiety or another mental health condition, you may be more likely to develop anxiety as well. You may have a shared genetic predisposition for anxiety, or you could learn their anxious behaviors.

Your risk of anxiety is also higher if you have trauma in your past, high stress levels, or if you abuse drugs or alcohol.

How is anxiety treated?

Traditionally, anxiety is treated with an antidepressant, therapy, or a combination of both. However, up to 40% of patients with anxiety don’t get better with traditional treatments.

At Ketamine Integrative Medicine, Dr. Lusko and her team provide customized ketamine infusion or oral ketamine as an alternative anxiety treatment.

What should I expect during ketamine therapy?

Dr. Lusko and her team offer both ketamine infusions and oral ketamine as in-office anxiety treatments. You spend at least two hours in the welcoming office when you have your ketamine therapy.

If you take ketamine orally, you rest in one of the well-appointed treatment rooms while Dr. Lusko and her team observe you as the medication takes effect.

During a ketamine infusion, you relax in a comfortable chair while you receive the medication through an IV. You may experience a floating or tingling sensation during the infusion. Any irregular sensations should subside soon after your infusion is complete.

You need a friend or family member to drive you home after your treatment as ketamine can leave you feeling tired and temporarily reduce your alertness and reaction time.

Call Ketamine Integrative Medicine or make an appointment online today to find out if ketamine can reduce your anxiety and restore your quality of life.
